Spain - Mango production Málaga anticipated to drop by 70 per cent

Málaga's mango production is anticipated to drop by 70 per cent, yielding around 12,000 tons due to water shortages and challenges during flowering periods. The Spanish Tropical Association notes that this decrease might elevate the fruit's market value in Europe. Málaga, contributing 85 per cent to the EU's mango production, aims to enhance its market presence across key European regions, including France, Germany, Italy, and Eastern Europe.

The campaign will continue until early autumn, with efforts to secure research funding for flowering issues and achieve Protected Geographical Indication status for Málaga mangoes. The region's significant mango cultivation faces hurdles due to severe drought conditions, impacting water availability, flowering and fruit development, fruit quality, and soil health.
