A group of farmers from at least three villages in Mudukulathur block thronged the Collectorate on Monday to convey their grievance about their crop insurance amount. The farmers said they received only ₹68 per acre towards crop insurance, while those in other hamlets in the same block got ₹22,500 per acre. After suffering 100% crop loss due to failure of the northeast monsoon during 2017-18, they had been fighting to get crop insurance in the last six months. They were disappointed when they found ₹68 per acre credited into their bank accounts, they said. They made representations to the district administration and Minister for Information Technology M. Manikandan but to no avail. The Minister promised that they would get the full amount of ₹22,500 within a week, but they had not received till Monday. The district administration too had promised to set right the anomaly, but nothing was done. Farmers, who got full crop insurance for 2016-17, had been fighting for crop insurance for 2017-18 as the insurance firm, Agriculture Insurance Company of India Limited, delayed the payment, citing one reason or the other. The issue figured prominently in April 18 elections, when about 2,000 farmers and their family members in four villages boycotted polling.
