Rain accompanied with hailstorm on Monday have damaged the standing wheat crop in the district. The authorities said wheat crop on 63,000 hectares had been affected. District chief agriculture officer KR Banga said the reports of damage to crop were received from all over the district. The loss of yield would be more in areas where yet to be ripened crop was flattened due to hailstorm, he added. He said the Agriculture Department had started assessing the loss suffered by farmers. Farmer Gurbachan Singh Bela said the rain started at 2.30 am in the region accompanied with hailstorm that damaged the crops. “Not only the harvesting will be delayed but farmers will also have to shell out more money for harvesting as combine operators will charge more now,” he said.
