USA - Michigan cherry farmers worry as cherry crops continue to see decline

Northern Michigan's multi-million dollar cherry industry is on the decline. A new projection from the Michigan Department of Agriculture shows this season's crop is projected to be 5% lower than last year's harvest. An unusually warm spring, weeks of overnight frost and drought have caused damage to the cherry crop. “Everyone is experiencing some type of loss, at least 50% if not more," said Vice President of Sales and Marketing at King Orchards Juliette McAvoy. The USDA's projection for this season is 65.5 million pounds of tart cherries. Taking a look at the numbers, last year there were 69.3 million pounds. This marks two years of cherry shortages in a row and two seasons that were less than half of the 170 million pound harvest in 2019. “King Orchards is experiencing our second year of almost total crop failure," said McAvoy. “It’s pretty devastating for our business.”
McAvoy has been growing cherries at the family orchard her entire life.
She said over the years, she's seen the industry take a turn. “With low prices due to imports from Turkey, and then followed by these crop failures," said McAvoy. "It’s really hard on the industry and many growers are struggling.” And crop failures are starting to become a lot more common. “My father says that there was a crop failure in maybe the 50s or 60s," said McAvoy. "Since then we’ve had a crop failure here at King orchards in 2002, 2012, and then 2020 and 2021. So that’s four crop failures in the last 19 years.” The decreasing number of crops affects the supply and demand which trickles down to what you can expect the next time you go to the grocery store. “You probably will see price increases in your dried cherries and your cherry concentrate," said McAvoy. "We really want to see the tart cherry industry continue and continue to grow. These high prices are volatile they’re not good for the industry." And eventually, those high prices will impact the entire nation. “Michigan has traditionally grown about 70% of the nation’s tart cherries," said McAvoy. "So when Michigan has a crop failure, we feel it all across the county.” In their 125 acres of tart cherries, King Orchards usually harvest more than a million pounds of cherries. This year, they're only expecting around 200,000 pounds. Source - https://upnorthlive.com
