India - West Bengal Farmers Receiving Bangla Shasya Bima Crop Insurance Compensation

Finally, a wave of relief for the farming community in West Bengal. The disbursement of compensation funds under the state-sponsored crop insurance scheme has officially begun. Farmers across several districts have started receiving credit notifications via SMS on their mobile phones. This initiative aims to provide financial support to those who suffered crop losses due to unpredictable weather conditions. However, the process to check eligibility and payment status has slightly changed this time.

Understanding the Disbursement Source

The money currently being credited to farmers’ bank accounts is part of the ‘Bangla Shasya Bima’ (BSB) scheme. This state government project is designed to compensate farmers for crop damages caused by natural calamities like drought, floods, or excessive rainfall. The current payout covers those who insured their crops during the Rabi and Kharif seasons of 2025.

For this fiscal cycle, ‘SBI General Insurance’ is operating as the insurance partner. Consequently, the SMS or email notifications received by farmers mention this entity. The compensation is primarily targeting losses such as paddy damage due to water scarcity or potato crop failure due to unseasonal rains.

Why Are Individual Losses Not Covered?

A common grievance among farmers is the non-receipt of funds despite having valid insurance and suffering crop loss. The reason lies in the technical framework of the scheme. The Bangla Shasya Bima scheme does not function based on individual assessments.

The core condition for receiving aid is ‘Area-Based Damage.’ According to the rules, a specific Mouza or Panchayat area is declared ‘affected’ only if at least 50% or more of the farmers in that region suffer crop loss. If only a few individual farmers face damages while the majority of the area’s harvest remains intact, the compensation is not triggered for that region.

How to Check Payment Status and Name List

Previously, when Bajaj Allianz was the partner, farmers could easily check the claim amount and status online. However, with the transition to SBI General Insurance, the current online portal has limited functionality regarding payment details. At present, you can only verify if your crop is insured online, but not the claim amount.

To know if you will receive the money or to check the exact amount, you must follow an offline verification process:

  • Visit your local Block Agriculture Office or ADO office.
  • The insurance company sends a verified beneficiary list to these government offices.
  • Officials at the agriculture department can check this list to confirm if funds have been allocated for your Mouza and how much you are entitled to receive.

Expert Advice for Future Safety

One of the biggest advantages of this scheme is that it is completely free for farmers. The entire premium is paid by the West Bengal State Government. Therefore, regardless of whether you receive compensation in a particular season, it is highly advisable to enroll in the scheme every year for both Rabi and Kharif seasons. This ensures that you remain financially protected against major agricultural disasters in the future. If you haven’t received the money yet, it is recommended to wait for a few days or consult the local agriculture office.
