Farmers in Vietnam's Kinh Mon growing region are completing winter onion and garlic planting following the rice and summer-autumn harvests. Dry weather has supported land preparation and planting schedules.
By late October, Tran Lieu ward had largely completed planting over 970 hectares of winter crops, including over 930 hectares of onions, with the remaining area allocated to garlic.
Nam An Phu commune plans to cultivate over 1,000 hectares during the 2026-2027 winter season, including 912 hectares of onions and garlic. Crop values are estimated at 200-400 million VND (approximately US$7,600-15,200) per hectare, depending on the variety.
Some growers are introducing automated irrigation systems and adjusting cultivation practices to reduce labor requirements and improve crop quality.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, annual onion and garlic cultivation across the city covers approximately 7,500-7,600 hectares, yielding an estimated 150,000 tons.
Kinh Mon onions and garlic supply domestic markets and are exported to the Middle East, Russia, South Korea, Taiwan, EU countries, and the U.S.
Local authorities are supporting cultivation improvements, processing development, and cooperation between growers, businesses, and agricultural cooperatives.
